What is Abnormal Behaviour? The course offers five Characteristics of Abnormality. None are, by themselves, adequate definitions of abnormality, but together, they provide a framework for understanding it.
-
The History of Psychopathology shows that different historical periods have emphasized one of three views concerning the causes of psychopathology.
-
Students will learn the role of paradigms in science, and how current paradigms can be used to help understand and study various types of psychopathology.
-
The course also deals with methods used to assess individuals who may have psychological problems, covering the accuracy of assessments and described methods of assessment.
-
Cultural Diversity and Clinical Assessment discusses issues in assessing individuals of different cultures. Studies suggest clinicians may misdiagnose pathology in individuals of other cultures.
These studies suggest the need for great sensitivity and awareness of cultural variation.
-
The Consistency and Variability of Behaviour reviews a basic argument over whether behaviour is consistent or variable across situations. Traditional paradigms focus on personality traits leading to predictions that behaviour will be consistent across situations.
-
The course will discuss research methods in psychopathology, and then begin covering the major forms of abnormality.
